Just when I was beginning to think that television was stultifying our minds, that text messaging was butchering our language, and that convenience and comfort were robbing us of our vitality and spiritual authenticity, I encountered a message of such startling simplicity, such scintillating clarity, such bald truth, that it renewed my faith in humanity. I hereby submit this picture as a lantern, a Polaris. To all those who must daily slay a Goliath named cynicism; those bone-weary soldiers whose ears sift the silence in search of that glorious trumpet blast: reinforcements!; those prisoners who watch for some token of joy—take heart, children, a Raceway gas station in rural Tennessee yet offers a safe place, an oasis of common sense and decency, for humankind:
